Conservation Work on an Ancient Sicilian Processional Banner: Preliminary Analyses and in Situ Restoration

Abstract Before carrying out the conservation work on the gilded wooden frame of the processional banner coming from Tusa, Sicily, some preliminary diagnostic analyses were conducted in order to identify materials that made up the wooden frame. After a micro-sampling phase, a thin section of the wooden support allowed to identify the timber as linden wood (basswood). The X-Ray Fluorescence analysis confirmed the presence of a thin layer of primer made of plaster and animal glue covered with a red bolus primer, used for the gilding process. The restoration was carried out during the opening hours of the museum, allowing visitors to be informed on the restoration phases.
Suppression of pigment interference in the gas chromatographic analysis of proteinaceous binding media in paintings with EDTA.

A method to suppress the interference of pigments in the analysis of proteinaceous media used in paintings is presented in this paper. This method is based on the formation of metallic ion-ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) complexes previous to the derivatisation process, using ethyl chloroformate (ECF), to transform the amino acids in N(O,S)-ethoxycarbonyl (EOC) ethyl esters. Test specimens, containing different proteinaceous media such as albumin, porcine gelatine and casein mixed with lead white, chalk, verdigris and raw Sienna have been prepared for carrying out this study. Organic materials in the wall paintings in Pompei: a case study of Insuladel Centenario

Abstract Background The present research concerns the Roman wall paintings preserved at Insula del Centenario (IX, 8), the important Pompeian block situated in the Regio IX, along Via di Nola. Results The aims of this research are two: to verify the presence of lipidic and proteinaceous material to spread the pigments, and to identify organic matter in painting materials owing to previous restoration works.
